Florida State University’s School of Dance is proud to announce Declaration of She, a two-night event that will showcase the groundbreaking work of choreographers Stephanie Battle, Rochelle Phillips, and Marielle Richardson. This free showcase will take place on February 28 and March 1, 2025, at 7:30 PM in Nancy Smith Fichter Theatre on the FSU campus.

Declaration of She highlights themes of identity, belonging, culture, and connection, brought to life through innovative choreographic practices.

Stephanie Battle will delve into the intricate relationship between nature and human experience. Her work uncovers patterns that reflect themes of identity and belonging, drawing from the wisdom of nature. Through ritual, embodied memory, gesture, and vocal sound, Six Women of Color share powerful stories of lineage and ancestral connection. These narratives invite the audience to reflect on their own roles within the interconnected tapestry of life.

Rochelle Phillips will take audiences on an immersive journey into the world of Africanist aesthetics, using contemporary movement to channel the powerful energy of trap music and the untold stories of Black women. This immersive experience transports viewers into the heart of Atlanta’s vibrant clubs and gritty trap houses, where the rebellious spirit of the music ignites a transformative experience.

Marielle Richardson will explore the longstanding connection between music, movement, and nostalgia. Through collaborative listening sessions, Richardson and her cast create movements inspired by the emotions and memories evoked by sound. With the use of projection design, she will bring the music to life on both the body and the screen, offering a visual representation of the soundscore that defines the nostalgic journey.

Declaration of She is the culmination of three years of research and creative practice, underscoring the dedication and vision of these emerging choreographers. Join us for an evening of powerful artistry and celebration of innovative voices in the dance world.

🖤 RSVP required for the 3rd performance, "Untrapped," in the Black Box Studio (space is limited)! https://linktr.ee/declarationofshe2025
