The tradition is seen by tens of thousands live at Doak Campbell on Saturdays, roaring in unison as Renegade rears up and the flaming spear is planted into the turf. And yet, FSU’s commitment to this time-honored tradition extends far past the spear planting. From the farm to the field, the entire Renegade Team, led by Allen Durham, strives to keep every step of the process the same as the first time Renegade took the field against Oklahoma State in 1978.
Bill Durham, Allen Durham's father, first came up with the idea while he was a student at Florida State University, but the idea was quickly shut down until 1978, when he approached Bobby Bowden. With the undying support of Bowden, Durham was able to make this dream become a reality by working with the Seminole Tribe of Florida in order to gain their permission to recreate the image of Osceola and Renegade as Florida State's new symbol.
