The Hilton Center and the DeVoe L. Moore Center present a talk by Dr. Victor Claar.
Fair Trade is a way of doing business that ultimately aims to keep small farmers an active part of the world marketplace and aims to empower consumers to make purchases that support their values.
Victor V. Claar raises significant economic and moral questions about both the logic and economic reasoning underlying the fair-trade movement. In this talk, Claar suggests that, for all its good intentions, fair trade may not be of particular service to the poor, especially in the developing world.
After the talk, a response will be given by FSU Entrepreneur in Residence and Moran School Director of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Mark McNees, founder of RedEye Coffee, which supports and encourages fair trade practices.
Claar is associate professor of economics at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, where he holds the BB&T Distinguished Professorship in Free Enterprise. He studied business and math as an undergraduate at Houghton College in upstate New York, and earned his masters and doctoral degrees in economics at West Virginia University.
