About this Event
Florida State Opera presents the collegiate premiere of Carlisle Floyd’s latest opera, Prince of Players.
Based on the stage play Compleat Female Stage Beauty by Jeffrey Hatcher, Prince of Players is the tale of Restoration-era actor Edward Kynaston, heralded as the greatest portrayer of female characters in a time when only men were permitted onstage. King Charles II, in an effort to please his favored mistress, actress Nell Gwynn, decrees that only women shall play female characters on the stage. Kynaston, who has only ever played female roles, must rediscover his talent if he has any hope of continuing a life on the stage. With the assistance of his dresser turned actress, Margaret Hughes, he struggles to recast his identity as an actor.
Featuring the University Symphony Orchestra and vocal performance students from the College of Music, performances are March 30th, 31st, April 1st, and April 2nd in Opperman Music Hall. A pre-opera lecture will be presented in Opperman Music Hall one hour prior to each performance. Tickets are available through the COM Box Office at (850) 645-7949.
