Title: "Seas the Day: Restoring Shellfish, Restoring Coasts"
Description: Emily Fuqua and Morgan Hawkins are Ph.D. students in the Brooke Lab at Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory. Both Fuqua and Hawkins have been involved in the establishment of the FSUCML’s Shellfish Research and Restoration hatchery since 2021.
Fuqua’s work focuses on how environmental stress affects coastal and estuarine animals and their restoration success. Currently, she works with the eastern oyster in the FSUCML hatchery, but while earning her Master’s degree, she worked with the South Carolina DNR finfish stock enhancement program stocking cobia, red drum, and sea trout along SC’s coast. She received her Master’s from the University of South Carolina, Charleston in 2019 and her bachelor’s from Auburn University in 2016.
Hawkins’ research focuses on optimizing bay scallop restoration aquaculture techniques inside and outside the hatchery. She has been involved with FSUCML since 2015, where she began as a volunteer with Dr. Brooke. She graduated from FSU in the spring of 2021 and was awarded the Chris and Jennifer Lazzara Family Student Success Internship, where she worked as a hatchery technician until beginning graduate school in the fall 2021.
Their talk will delve into restoration aquaculture, how it can help coastal populations of shellfish, how their restoration aids in coastal resilience, and their ongoing research to improve restoration aquaculture for these species.
