This presentation will explore the intersection of two concepts: the artist as therapist and community-based practice. What does it look like in practice to highlight one’s identity as an artist without relinquishing one’s clinical knowledge? What do we mean by community, and how do the arts function to support rather than disrupt the everyday, homegrown practices of health and healing within communities? Who is included by the kinds of practices art therapists offer, and who is left out? How do art therapists become better equipped to foster inclusivity, solidarity, and resilience within art making spaces? These and other related questions will be explored through interactive lectures, visual dialogues, critically engaged discussions, and collective arts making.
