This session will build on the “Encoding Texts for Primary Source Research” session, so please try to attend that. If you can’t email Sarah Stanley (scstanley@fsu.edu) and she will provide you with slides and resources.
During this session we will talk about how to take your texts and make them easily manageable and machine readable. We will start off with a brief overview of best practices for file management (never lose track of a file on your computer again). Then we will move on to a discussion of schemas, which can help you to effectively collect information from the documents you use for research. This session is particularly useful for researchers who want to collect consistent information about historical people, places, organizations, or texts. If you’ve ever gotten frustrated with creating table rules for Excel spreadsheets or dealing with database software for your historical research, this session is for you.
