About this Event
How does gender bias persist in academic letters of recommendation at FSU? How might gender identity predict the likelihood of being described as stellar and reliable, or confident and intelligent? Recent research has suggested that systemic biases can influence the content of letters of recommendation by reinforcing traditional gender norms and expectations. Join PIE staff as we discuss the findings of our 2021-2022 Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) project, in which we investigated the systemic effects of gender bias on letters of recommendation across the disciplines at FSU. This virtual workshop will discuss continuing areas of concern as well as the promising strides being made to achieve parity in letters of recommendation. We'll also introduce the project's updated recommendations on how to avoid bias and promote equity in letters for students.
Graduate students, faculty, and staff are all welcome to attend.
