Description

In this presentation, a team of researchers from Florida State University, the University of Belize, and a Maya elder from Chiapas, Mexico, shares insights from two community-engaged research projects that explore how formal educational spaces can offer, facilitate, and/or constrain a sense of belonging for Indigenous Maya students in Mexico and Belize. The findings show the need to go beyond  narrow notions of access and representation and highlight the transformative power of affect and presence in shaping these students’ sensemaking and belonging within educational settings.

Reception to follow. In-person attendance is strongly recommended.
