Text Analysis and Visualization

During this session, we will learn about some basic text analysis skills and tools. We will start off with the browser tool Voyant to get a general sense of the content of our documents. We will then use the statistical language R (don’t let the word “statistical” scare you; you won’t be required to use advanced math in this session). We will start off by talking about how to select a corpus or text for analysis. Then we will do some hands-on with R to clean up the text, look at how word frequencies change throughout the course of the text, and create some basic visualizations. We will also take a look at some digital projects that have used R for text analysis, and talk about the methods they used to do that analysis.

Great workshop! I learned a lot (e.g., the limitations of OCR), and learned how to import one my text corpora to RStudio.

Great introduction to some tools with helpful examples of things to be aware of when looking at output. Instructor was very knowledgeable.

I am very excited about the concept of text analysis and visualization. This morning, I was interested in the usage of a specific word in the last 5 years - for some research I am doing about the speed of language changing...and I was very glad that I spent my morning learning from Sarah yesterday. This is going to help!
