In this edition, we delve into “The Research Road to Grad School,” featuring three accomplished panelists who have not only completed the Honors in the Major Program and the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program at FSU, but have also pursued advanced studies and have thriving careers.

Salma Elsheikh (B.S. '20), FSU Medical Student
Salma Elsheikh is a current FSU medical student finishing up her third-year rotations. Elsheikh graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary medical sciences in the spring of 2020 and immediately began medical school. During her undergraduate years at FSU, Elsheikh was involved in the Medical Response Unit, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, Service Leadership Seminar, Hall Council, Honors in the Major and created the Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences Ambassador Program. She was also a PASS, also known as Supplemental Instruction (SI), leader for three years, primarily tutoring general and organic chemistry courses, as well as a biochemistry teaching assistant her senior year. Elsheikh continued her passion for mentoring by introducing a mentor-mentee program at the College of Medicine. The program connects upperclassmen students with first-year students who share similar backgrounds or interests and provides them with a support system during medical school. Elsheikh will be applying for her residency next year in internal medicine and hopes to one day work for Doctors Without Borders.
Dr. Henry Moreno (B.S. '17), General Dentist
Dr. Henry Moreno is a general dentist at a dental clinic in Hiram, Georgia. Dr. Moreno oversees the care of patients who come to his clinic seeking dental treatment and cleanings. In addition to providing dental care, Dr. Moreno educates and guides his patients on the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and the condition of their dentition. Dr. Moreno chose his career path before graduating from high school in 2013 and subsequently attended Florida State University. He graduated Cum Laude in 2017 with a degree in biology and was part of the Honors Program, Honors in the Major, Garnet and Gold Scholar Society and Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). Taking a break from his studies for a year, Dr. Moreno prepared for the dental admissions exam and applied for dental school. During this time, he worked as a dental assistant and mathematics tutor. In 2018, he began his studies at New York University College of Dentistry, graduating in 2022. After completing his degree, Dr. Moreno pursued additional training in general dentistry and dental emergencies at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, N.Y. Currently, he resides in Atlanta, with his fiancée and two pets.
Sofia Varela Hernandez (B.A. '22), University of Pennsylvania Graduate Student
Sofia Varela Hernandez holds a Bachelor of Arts in English – Editing, Writing, and Media from Florida State University. At FSU, she was part of the Honors in the Major Program and completed her Honors thesis titled “Bookbinding and the Double Transaction: A Case Study of the Shaw Collection,” which focused on children’s books published from 1850-1950 in the United States and the United Kingdom. Hernandez was a recipient of the Project Enhancement Network and Incubator (PEN & Inc.) grant from FSU Libraries, which she used to fund a research trip. Through the PEN & Inc. grant, she developed a website for her thesis using the CreateFSU Platform. Hernandez also presented her research at the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference (FURC) and the ACC Meeting of the Minds in 2022. She is currently getting her master’s degree in English at the University of Pennsylvania.
