Writing Well: Techniques to Maximize the Success of Fellowship and Grant Applications

Your ability to communicate your ideas in writing will directly impact your professional success, including obtaining grants and fellowships. Writing well is not exclusively a natural talent; it is a skill that anyone can develop and improve. In this workshop, we will discuss the characteristics of good writing (and bad writing) and teach specific stylistic, grammatical, and structural techniques that will increase the clarity, conciseness, cohesiveness, and coherence of your writing. Further, we will detail strategies for drafting and editing personal and research statements as part of competitive grant or fellowship applications, as well as cognitive techniques for maintaining your motivation to finish them.
